Track and Field find success at D.C. States

On February 14, Visitation’s winter track team competed against 26 other teams in the DC States meet, placing 4th overall. Visi participated in eight track events and two field events, with the top eight finishers contributing points to their respective teams’ overall score.

There were many outstanding athletic performances that contributed to Visitation’s high placement against the other schools. Many Visitation runners placed in their respective events, including the 500m — our highest scoring finish. In the 500m, Madison Rassas `24 placed first, Helen Bonner `25 placed second, and Coco Murray `26 placed fifth. Overall, Madison Rassas `24 earned the highest number of points for Visitation. She placed first in the 500m and 800m and ran in the second-placing 800m relay. In addition to her success in terms of placement, Rassas broke a team record in the 800m.

Rassas kept a consistent and fast pace throughout the race. The track team coach, watching her race, knew she had the ability to break the school record. On her last 200m, arguably the most vital part of the race, she could hear the coach yelling at her to “go now!” Rassas sped up on her last lap around the track and finished with a personal best and a new school record.

Visitation’s performance at the meet was truly a team effort, which is most obvious in the relay teams that competed. They had to work together to achieve their success, relying on each other. “Relays are always my favorite part of track and field meets. While track may be an individual sport where you compete against even your teammates, through relays we all work together and push each other to put in our best effort. There is no better feeling than handing off the baton after finishing your leg and cheering for the next runner!” Becky Island ‘24 said.

Aside from the successful races, States was more than just an important meet – it was a team experience. “States was so much because it was a chance for all of us as a team to bond and become closer,” Mavourneen McGreevy `24 said. With consistent hard work, team- work, and endurance, the track and field Cubs had an awesome season overall!
